The New Faculty Orientation (NFO) is an essential program designed to introduce new faculty and teaching staff to the teaching and learning environment at HKUST. This comprehensive program includes 3 compulsory sessions and 4 optional deep-dive sessions, covering the undergraduate curriculum, our student demographics, teaching insights from award-winning professors, and essential eLearning platforms at HKUST.

Southeast and East Asian countries have not only caught up with Western countries in academic performance but have even overtaken them in many areas. However, in many countries, this has led to a decline in the subjective well-being of the students, culminating in harmful experiences of stress, externalized behavior, depression, and even suicide.

Abstract

In Spring 2023, the CEI invited faculty and teaching staff to propose Education and Generative AI (EDGE-AI) projects looking to explore new teaching and learning methods utilizing GenAI. A year and a half later, these projects are yielding important findings for innovative teaching practices. In the second workshop of our EDGE-AI series, two of our projects share their work so far, and how their findings can help shape HKUST's teaching and learning landscape.

Rubrics play a crucial role in evaluating student work at HKUST, providing clear criteria for assessment and feedback. This workshop aims to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to create effective writing rubrics that promote learning outcomes and enhance assessment practices. Participants will explore the principles of rubric design, including clarity, specificity, alignment with learning objectives, and practical strategies for developing and implementing writing rubrics. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have the tools needed to design and implement writing rubrics that support student success and improve the assessment process in a university setting.

Miranda Fung Education Development Manager CEI, HKUST Miranda Fung is the Education Development Manager of the Center of Education Innovation at HKUST. As a former lecturer and course developer, she has extensive experience in supporting various local universities to enhance quality of teaching and learning through curriculum development and assessment design. Passionate about equity and inclusivity in assessment practices, Miranda is committed to designing inclusive assessment and feedback approaches in different teaching and learning contexts in higher education.
