The CEI Learning Lab: AI Sandbox for Educators is designed to equip you with practical AI skills for your classroom. In this series, we will highlight the latest AI developments, feature faculty insights on how they incorporate AI into their courses, and provide hands-on activities, allowing participants to experiment with AI tools in real time. A special student-led session will also demonstrate how learners are leveraging AI in their studies.

This series aims to offer participants a holistic understanding of AI’s transformative potential alongside practical strategies for teaching and learning. We invite you to join us to learn more about technological innovation and engaging ways in which you can design inclusive and future-ready learning experiences.

Miss Karina YUEN
Assistant Education Development Manager
CEI, HKUST

Karina Yuen is an Assistant Education Development Manager at CEI. With a Master's in Information Technology in Education from the University of Hong Kong, she leads the design and delivery of the university-wide Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Training Program, serving over 800 students annually. Her innovative integration of gamification, blended learning, and AI in GTA training has earned recognition with the Gold Award in the Exemplary Teaching and Learning Award at eLearning Forum Asia 2024 and the Silver Award in Blended and Presence Learning at the QS Reimagine Education Awards 2024.

Karina believes in putting pedagogy first, with technology and AI serving as powerful tools to enhance learning. She develops AI-enhanced learning experiences and continues to explore practical applications of AI in education, focusing on the intersection of pedagogy, technology, and effective teaching strategies.

In this workshop, Dr. Jac Leung will share his insights on the utility of AI in and for student learning. Jac will share what worked and what did not work from his teaching experiences for the past semesters since GenAI emerged. Recognizing the rigorous competition of better and better models of AI, Jac emphasizes that educators should focus on adopting the most suitable and effective tools for teaching and learning. Participants will gain hands-on experiences in using GenAI tools to complement active learning strategies. This workshop aims to foster collaborative learning and encourage exchange of ideas among the HKUST teaching and learning community.

Dr. Jac LEUNG
Lecturer
ISD, HKUST

Dr. Jac Leung is a Lecturer in the Division of Integrative Systems and Design and Associate Program Director of the MSc on Technology, Leadership and Entrepreneurship program at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has attained the Doctor of Education from The University of Hong Kong, MSc in Environmental Engineering, and BSc in Mechanical Engineering. His teaching and research interests include design-based learning, educational technologies, design and systems thinking, AI literacy, and self-determination theory.

Dr. Leung is dedicated to promoting human-AI collaboration approaches and AI-assisted design thinking practices. One of the projects he led named “Developing an AI platform to promote university students’ reflective capacity” was shortlisted for the QS Reimagine Education Award 2024 under the category of Best Use of Generative AI, being ranked top 25% among over 1300 submissions. He is the co-author of the book AI Literacy in K-16 classrooms. The book received the China New Development Award from Springer Nature in 2023. He is the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator of various projects related to Generative AI in education, collaborative inquiry skills, metaverse, makers education, and sustainability education (sum ~HKD12.8M).

Dr. Leung is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and holds a Fellow member of the Academy of Education Excellence (AEE) at HKUST. He serves multiple academic committees for 2 UG and 2 PG programs and curriculum development including the BSc Integrative Systems and Design program, the Extended Major in AI program, the MSc Technology, Leadership and Entrepreneurship program, and the MPhil Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He also serves as the educational advisor for multiple AI-powered Educational Technology platforms.
