Designed to enhance students' teaching competencies, the course comprises two parts:

Students are required to deliver instructional sessions assigned by their respective departments.

MPhil students are required to deliver at least one 30-minute instructional session in front of a group of students in one term.

PhD students, on the other hand, are required to deliver one such session in two different terms.

For PDEV 6800Z, attending all five modules is mandatory. Students will be pre-enrolled to one of the PDEV 6800Z sessions in their first RPg semester. Given the collaborative nature of the coursework, students should ONLY attend their enrolled sessions. Attendance for unregistered sessions will NOT be counted.

Do I need to enrol in PDEV 6800?

You don't need to manually enrol. The system will automatically enrol you in one of the PDEV 6800Z (Part 1) sessions during your first RPg semester. After passing Part 1, you'll be enrolled in PDEV 6800A-J (Part 2) in your second semester. The specific suffix for Part Two (A to J) is determined by your school, department, or division. If PDEV 6800Z isn't listed in your course registration, please contact CEI at taprog@ust.hk.

Can I swap to another session?

Yes, you can change sessions during the university's add/drop period (check the ARO website for enrolment dates). If the session you want is full, then you will be put on the wait list. If the session remains full and the swap is unsuccessful, you will remain in your original session.

Therefore, it's recommended to review your enrolled session and final class schedule after the add/drop period.

Newly admitted RPgs who meet the following exemption criteria can apply for course exemption. An exemption application needs to be submitted to CEI for approval. However, while these students may be exempted from part one of the course, they must still participate in the second part involving departmental teaching assignments.

Eligibility for Exemption

For Graduates of the GTA Training Program (offered by CEI):

A full-time RPg may be granted exemption from the first part of PDEV 6800 (a.k.a. PDEV 6800Z in 2021 cohort and onwards) if any of the following exemption criteria is met:

• Completion of the GTA Training Program by CEI (previously CELT) within six years of joining HKUST.
• Completion of the GTA Training Program by CEI (previously CELT) more than six years prior, but with a minimum of three years of post-graduation teaching experience , or equivalent, in higher education after graduation

For Non-Graduates of the GTA Training Program

Exemption considerations for full-time RPgs not trained by CEI will be based on:

• Completion of a teaching-related training program / course of similar content and number of hours offered by other higher education institutions within three years before the date of program admission at HKUST.
• A minimum of three years of relevant full-time teaching experience, or equivalent, in higher education.

Approval is subject to the decision made by CEI.

Notes: Students who completed the first part of PDEV 6800 from the Fall of 2019 onwards are exempt from PDEV 6800Z and don't need to apply for exemption. For assistance, students can reach out to CEI through the general inquiry.

How to Apply for Exemption

Eligible RPgs can follow these steps:

Step 1: Access the link and choose "Exemption Application”.
Step 2: Submit the online application with necessary supporting documents.

Applicants may refer to the following for some suggested documents.

For Graduates of the GTA Training Program (provided by CEI / CELT)

• a copy of Certificate of Achievement issued by CEI / CELT as proof of program completion, and/or
• official documents of employment as proof of teaching / instructional experience (if applicable).

For Non-Graduates of the GTA Training Program

• a copy of an official academic transcript and/or certificate issued by the teaching-related training program, with the full description of the program curriculum, and/or
• official documents of employment as proof of teaching / instructional experience (if applicable).

Step 3: Wait for CEI's confirmation email, typically processed within two weeks if all the required documents are received.

It is suggested that the applicant should attend the modules before exemption is approved. CEI reserves all the right to make the final decision.
