With a new semester approaching, CEI would like to offer Zoom Basics and Advanced Training for new teaching staff and for those who may have missed previous sessions.

The training program will walk you through the basic features to get you started and introduce more advanced interactive features you can use to engage students throughout your online lesson. These four training sessions will be conducted online using Zoom.

After you register, you will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link to the corresponding training session.

Session 1 | Basics
 

This workshop is designed to introduce Zoom’s basic features and set-up to new faculty and teaching staff who have not used Zoom for online teaching.

The session will cover:

  • interacting as a student and suggested student etiquette
  • using basic features to facilitate live online lessons and managing interaction (screen share, annotations, chat, raise hands, and mute/unmute)
  • understanding Zoom global settings, basic settings and scheduling recurring Zoom sessions through Canvas
  • understanding the roles of Host and Co-host during a Zoom session
  • accessing and publishing recorded Zoom sessions in Canvas after a class
  • viewing Zoom attendance records in Canvas after a class

Session 2 | Polling
 

Use polling in your live online classes to gather instant responses from students, check the temperature of the class and get a feel for student understanding throughout your lesson.

The session will cover:

  • experiencing polling and quizzing within a poll
  • creating Polls on the fly and before the session
  • using non-verbal feedback YES/NO buttons as a poll
  • downloading Polls results during and after the session
  • managing Polls as Host, Co-host and Alternative Host
  • other polling options

Session 3 | Breakout Rooms
 

Use Zoom Breakout Rooms to facilitate group discussions during your live online class – giving students opportunities to articulate their understanding or apply new concepts learned through collaborative groupwork.

The session will cover:

  • exploring audio, video and screen share controls inside a Breakout Room
  • setting-up Breakout Rooms – manual, random, pre-assign or self-select groups
  • understanding roles of Host vs Co-host during Breakout Rooms
  • managing groups
  • pedagogical Best Practices with Breakout Rooms

Session 4 | Whiteboard
 

Use whiteboard alternatives in live online lectures for handwriting math equations, chemical reactions or allowing students to annotate back.

The session will cover:

  • experiencing the Whiteboard feature in Zoom
  • using a webcam or a mobile phone with a mount as a visualizer (i.e. document camera) and handwriting formulae and equations on a piece of paper
  • using a pen computing device (e.g. iPad Pro, MS Surface, Wacom Tablet) to digitally write formulae and equations on the device
