CEI Learning Lab series: AI sandbox for educators | Workshop 4 & 5

The CEI Learning Lab: AI Sandbox for Educators is designed to equip you with practical AI skills for your classroom. In this series, we will highlight the latest AI developments, feature faculty insights on how they incorporate AI into their courses, and provide hands-on activities, allowing participants to experiment with AI tools in real time. A special student-led session will also demonstrate how learners are leveraging AI in their studies.
This series aims to offer participants a holistic understanding of AI’s transformative potential alongside practical strategies for teaching and learning. We invite you to join us to learn more about technological innovation and engaging ways in which you can design inclusive and future-ready learning experiences.

Metacognition—the ability to reflect upon and strategically control one’s cognitive processes—is increasingly essential in the age of generative AI (GenAI). While AI technologies like ChatGPT and DeepSeek offer significant potential for offloading routine cognitive tasks, inappropriate dependence may impair critical thinking, deep learning, and effective problem-solving. Drawing upon recent research and best practices in higher education, this workshop will explore practical strategies to develop students’ metacognitive awareness. Participants will learn how to guide students in setting meaningful goals, monitoring their understanding, and critically evaluating the suitability and effectiveness of AI assistance. Through interactive activities, attendees will reflect on their own metacognitive strategies and consider ways to integrate metacognitive practices into their teaching, ultimately enhancing students’ self-regulated learning skills and ensuring AI tools complement rather than replace human cognition.

The advent of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools poses significant challenges to traditional assessment practices in higher education. To address this, assessment must evolve to become more authentic, multimodal, and cognitively demanding, ensuring that it measures genuine student learning rather than AI-generated outcomes. This workshop introduces evidence-based principles and frameworks for designing assessments that are resilient to GenAI while leveraging its capabilities. Participants will engage with innovative approaches such as problem-based assessments, dialogical assessments, and multimodal assessment techniques. Drawing on recent guidelines developed at HKUST and practical case studies, attendees will leave equipped with actionable insights for creating assessments that foster higher-order thinking, active engagement, and critical reflection, preparing students to effectively navigate and utilize AI-enhanced learning environments
