Grading with AI: How to Save Time, Improve Feedback, & Increase Consistency

About the workshop:

Grading and assessment continue to be significant challenges for many educators. It requires considerable time and effort to grade assignments. It requires even more time and energy to provide quality feedback, resulting in few instructors offering as many suggestions for improvement as they would like. Finally, even the most committed educators can lose focus after grading tens or even hundreds of essays, which may lead to inconsistent and unfair evaluations. Employing an AI grading assistant for preliminary essay assessment before human review can conserve educators' time, enhance the quality and timeliness of feedback, and promote consistency and fairness in grading. More broadly, AI-assisted grading presents an opportunity to reconsider the role of assessment in education and start realizing AI's considerable potential to transform the learning experience.

	Prof. Joon Nak CHOI Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Management Joon Nak CHOI (JC) is Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Management; Advisor to the MSc in Business Analytics Program, Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management; and Faculty Associate, Institute for Emerging Market Studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In addition to his academic appointments at HKUST, Professor Choi has also held professorships at Stanford University and NYU Shanghai. He is a member of HKUST's Task Force on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and formerly was a member of the Task Force on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, heading the Subcommittee on Incubation and Funding; he is also an Expert Delegate in Artificial Intelligence to the Digital Education Council, representing HKUST. He graduated from Brown with an AB in International Relations, Urban Studies, and Economics and from Stanford with an MA and a PhD in Sociology. Professor Choi's current work focuses on the intersection of business and technology, encompassing AI, data science, business analytics, management consulting, innovation, and business ethics; he is currently co-teaching HKUST's new undergraduate common core course on understanding and leveraging AI. His research has been published in academic outlets including Stanford University Press, Routledge, and the American Journal of Sociology as well as newspapers of record including the South China Morning Post and Maeil Kyungjae Daily; his work has also been cited in the MIT Technology Review and Sina.com in addition to the South China Morning Post. He serves as a member of the Urban Land Institute Hong Kong Technology and Innovation Committee and has been an invited speaker at events hosted by JLL, EY, the British Chamber of Commerce, the German Chamber of Commerce, the HK Institute of Human Resource Management, and various other corporate and industry entities. Professor Choi has been involved with several startups. He was Chief Data Scientist for AssertID, which was spun out from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He made angel investments in friends' startups in Silicon Valley, which left him poorer in wealth but richer in experience. After he returned to Hong Kong from a visiting professorship at Stanford, Professor Choi co-founded Zectr, which applied machine learning to automate survey-driven market research. More recently, he founded Learnovate, which is applying AI to education.

	Dr. Sean McMinn Director, Center for Education Innovation Dr Sean McMinn is the Director of Center for Educational Innovation at HKUST. Having nearly 20 years’ experience in higher education, Sean has taught a range of subjects, such as Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning, Business Communications, EAP, Digital Literacies, and Social Complex Systems, and has interests in learning design, educational technology, digital literacies, and networked learning. He won a Teaching Innovation Award in 2007 for his work with podcasts and education at HKUST and a SHSS Teaching Award in 2015.
