A Journey of Synthesis at HKUST

Seminar Overview:

A best practice education infrastructure tool adopted by university Mathematics Departments, in very significant numbers since the 1990s, is a walk-in help center. Such a help center offers the large number of students taking background mathematics courses help in acquiring basic mathematical and problem solving skills. Concurrently, the rise of web educational platforms such as the open source online homework system WeBWorK is another infrastructure tool to improve the teaching of basic mathematics.

This seminar covers how the synthesis of walk-in helper centers and online platforms have been extensively adopted in the USA with success, and how it has been successfully implemented at HKUST.

About the Speaker:

Allen Moy is a Professor in the HKUST Mathematics Department. His academic focus throughout his career has been and remains research mathematics. However, during a long career, beginning as a graduate student at the University of Chicago, and then stops at Yale University, the University of Washington, Rutgers University and the University of Michigan, he has been exposed to and absorbed many currents and developments in the teaching of mathematics. Taking his cue from other research mathematicians whom also take interest in mathematics education, he has strived to improve mathematics teaching too.
