Canvas Series | SPRING 2026
Did you know that HKUST uses Canvas as its Learning Management System? If you’d like to become a Canvas pro before you start teaching here, we’ve got you covered! We offer a series of four sessions available in both self-paced online modules and live online workshops. These sessions are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to master Canvas and enhance your students’ learning experience.
1 Canvas Basics | Familiarize yourself
with the key features of Canvas to get started
2 Assessments & Feedback | Delve
deep into the setup of assignments, discussions, and quizzes to support different
assessment strategies
3 Turnitin Assignments | Set up
assignments for originality checks and interpret the Turnitin reports
4 Student Group Work | Create virtual
collaboration spaces for students and manage group work efficiently
By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:
- describe the workflow and logistics involved in course creation for a semester
- configure a course site with appropriate settings and tools
- present and manage course content effectively
- manage and communicate with course participants
By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:
- create and set up different types of assessments
- develop grading rubrics for effective evaluation
- utilize various options to grade assignments and provide valuable feedback
- manage the release of assignments and course grades to students
By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:
- set up assignments with Turnitin originality checks
- grade Turnitin assignments in Canvas SpeedGrader
- access and interpret Turnitin originality reports
By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:
- create and manage student groups in Canvas
- recall the key features and tools available for group collaboration
- set up group assignments and discussions
- grade group assignments and discussions
The online live sessions are facilitated by Rambo Lai and May Tse from CEI’s Technology-Enhanced Teaching team. Once you have reserved a spot, a confirmation email containing the Zoom link will be sent to you.
These workshops, regardless of the delivery mode, are part of the Academy of Education Excellence (AEE) program. Upon completion, you will receive an official AEE badge.
Academic course sites will be created on Canvas before the term begins once your course is confirmed and submitted to the ARO. If you want to start earlier, you can sign up here to have your course site created sooner!
New Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) will receive training on Canvas Basics through PDEV6800Z. Existing GTAs can register for the workshops by sending an email to taprog@ust.hk.
