About the Series:

The Center for Education Innovation is proud to present a series of workshops and talks featuring experts from the Cyber-Physical Learning Alliance (CPLA), including key guests from Tecnológico de Monterrey (TEC) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), who will offer insights into the forefront of Cyber-Physical Learning (CPL). Through this series, we aim to deepen our collective understanding of CPL's transformative potential in higher education.

The sessions are designed to engage faculty members by showcasing innovative educational technologies and methods, such as living labs, learning analytics, and the use of portable EEG technology to assess learner concentration. These workshops equip faculty with tools to enhance teaching effectiveness and monitor learner engagement, and also foster data-informed decision-making. By utilizing empirical evidence, educators can tailor their teaching strategies to improve overall educational outcomes. These talks are particularly relevant for colleagues experimenting with VR, AR, XR, and AI in their teaching, providing them with valuable insights into how these technologies can be integrated into educational practices. Each session will not only highlight groundbreaking research and applications but also encourage discussions about the ethical and effective use of technology in education.

Join us in exploring how these advanced technologies can redefine teaching and learning, and prepare us for the future of education in an increasingly digital world.

Date: 14, 16 & 17 MAY 2024 (TUE, THU & FRI)
Venue: Room 6558 (Lift 27-28)
Organized by: Center for Education Innovation (CEI)
Speakers:

Details of the series:

Session 1

This seminar explores the Living Lab Methodology at the Institute for the Future of Education (IFE) at Technologico de Monterrey, where educational innovation comes to life through practical experimentation. The IFE Living Lab promotes educational innovation research and development by inviting users to conduct experimental research with innovative and disruptive technologies in user-centered (teachers and students) real contexts (physical, remote, and hybrid learning environments).

Topics:
  • What is a Living Lab? History and examples of the Living Lab methodology
  • How to Apply the Living Lab Methodology for Educational Innovation?
  • Who Engages in Co-creation? Giving voice to the IFE Living Lab stakeholders
  • Evolution of the IFE Living Lab Services: From Calls to an EdTech Marketplace
  • Do’s and Don'ts of a Living Lab in Education: Success and failure stories
  • Future Directions of the IFE Living Lab: Engaging in multi-institutional innovation
Date: 14 MAY 2024 (TUE)
Time: 15:00 – 17:00
Speaker: Dr. Luis F. Morán-Mirabal

Session 1

This seminar explores multimodal learning analytics research at the IFE Experiential Classroom at Technologico de Monterrey. The Experiential Classroom is a signature project being developed by the IFE Living Lab. It consists of a modular learning space where researchers, faculty members, and companies can conduct educational research with multimodal technologies at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Topics:
  • Learning Analytics: Leveraging student records to generate actionable feedback
  • Multimodal Learning Analytics: Incorporating student interactions and behaviors
  • Classroom Analytics Benchmark: Previous efforts reported in the literature
  • IFE Experiential Classroom: A modular learning space for multimodal research
Date: 16 MAY 2024 (THU)
Time: 10:00 – 12:00
Speaker: Dr. Luis F. Morán-Mirabal & Dr. Héctor Ceballos

Session 1

This is a hands-on guided workshop where participants will ideate together in small groups to discuss and generate concepts for a future classroom/living lab at HKUST. Participants will brainstorm and share ideas and features that a future classroom should have in the context of learning and teaching at HKUST. To facilitate ideation, examples of future classrooms of higher education institutes in Singapore will be shared. Through this workshop, the inputs collected will be used for future planning.

Date: 16 MAY 2024 (THU)
Time: 14:30 – 16:30
Speaker: Dr. Kenneth LO, SUTD

Session 1

This workshop explores the assessment of concentration using portable EEG technology. With the audience's participation, an example of a multimodal learning analytics experiment (Experiential Classroom) will be developed. Through this experiment, participants will actively contribute to the development of a concentration assessment model. Brain brainwave activity and concentration self-reports will be collected during various tasks using a time-based test and portable EEG headbands. Learn how to process and integrate this data using innovative classification algorithms from the IFE Living Lab.

Date: 17 MAY 2024 (FRI)
Time: 10:00 – 12:00
Speaker: Dr. Héctor Ceballos
