Using technology to enhance the quality of teaching and learning has always been one of our key goals. We have established an institutional Learning Management platform and a number of innovative eLearning tools to enhance teaching and learning experience at HKUST.
To ensure the eLearning platform and tools are implemented effectively, we provide regular eLearning workshops to help teaching staff become familiar with them, understand the pedagogical value behind them and be able to use them effectively in your teaching activities.
We also constantly monitor the development of teaching technologies in the market and recommends other innovative tools which we see a pedagogical value in it.
Below is a brief overview of the established eLearning platform and tools:
Learning Technologies
Learning Management System (LMS)
Canvas
Canvas is a comprehensive and user-friendly LMS acquired by HKUST in Jul 2014 to support the University’s Blended Learning initiative and the changing needs in learning and teaching.
iLearn is an HKUST Learning App that gives instant access to popular HKUST learning apps such as Canvas, SFQ, and PRS (iPRS).
Canvas Teacher from Instruture |
Canvas Teacher allows teachers to facilitate their courses on the go, both inside and outside the classroom. This app provides quick access to grading, communicating, and updating—three of the most frequent course facilitation tasks for teachers through Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes.

Online Teaching
Video Management System (VMS) and In-video Activity (IVA)
These tools are designed to help you create an interactive video-based learning environment with video analytics to track your students’ video learning progress. VMS is a centralized platform where you can store, organize, and manage all course-related videos and get insights from video analytics. In-video activity (IVA) is an LTI tool developed by CEI in 2023. It allows users to create interactions, such as questions, within a learning video.

Promote Originality / Prevent Plagiarism
Turnitin
Turnitin encourages original work and prevents plagiarism. Beyond checking the originality of students' work, Turnitin promotes a writing cycle that makes anti-plagiarism more meaningful to students’ learning. The cycle includes originality checking, online grading, providing feedback and peer review. It is globally used by millions of students and faculty. HKUST subscribed to this service to create a culture of academic integrity.
Turnitin has been integrated into Canvas to facilitate originality check for student work submitted through Canvas. You may log into your course site in Canvas to utilize this feature for student assignment submission.

Student Group Peer Review
Group Member Evaluation (Replacing iPeer)
Peer feedback is an essential learning activity that helps students recognize the contributions and qualities of excellent work and identify areas for improvement. It fosters metacognitive skills and cultivates a healthy culture of peer feedback within classrooms.
To enhance the effectiveness of peer feedback in student group work, we are excited to introduce Group Member Evaluation (GME) by FeedbackFruits. It will fully replace iPeer starting Fall 2025.
Group Member Evaluation offers seamless integration with Canvas and a well-designed workflow. It smoothly incorporates peer feedback and ratings into both graded and non-graded tasks. Additionally, in this AI era, it features an AI-powered feedback writing coach to help students enhance their feedback writing skills.
iPeer (Decommissioning from FALL 2025)
iPeer was adapted from an open source and HKUST customized it to suit our own needs. It supports 4 types of evaluations, namely Point Distribution, Rating Scale, Rubric and Commendation. The system aims to provide a platform for teaching staff to conduct student peer evaluation on group projects in a more efficient and effective way.

Personal Response System (PRS / iPRS)
PRS / iPRS promotes active learning in-class. It enables instructors to receive and analyze instant feedback from students in a large classroom setting.
Students in a classroom or a lecture theatre can respond to questions posed by the instructor with the click of a button. This provides a means for the instructor to instantly assess students' understanding of the subject matter and collect instant feedback from all students.
PRS / iPRS has been setup in all the central managed lecture theaters and classrooms.
If any students want to borrow the PRS handsets, please ask them to contact ITSC at 2358-6200 or visit the ITSC Service Desk at RM 2021 (Lift 2)
Survey
Qualtrics
Qualtrics is a user-friendly survey system introduced by ITSC, you may use it to collect feedback from students or conduct any teaching evaluation.
