Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
In alignment with our strategy to extend educational opportunities worldwide and our commitment to delivering high-quality free education to the general public, our collaborations with two leading MOOC providers, Coursera and edX, have been instrumental in advancing this mission.
Our partnership journey commenced with Coursera in late 2012, marking HKUST as the pioneering Asian institution on the platform, followed swiftly by another collaboration with edX. Since our inaugural MOOC offerings in 2013, more than 4 million learners from across the globe have engaged with approximately 80 free courses provided by HKUST on both platforms.
Apart from free individual courses, HKUST also offers MicroMasters programs such as Big Data Technology and Specialization series covering a wide array of subjects, including Software Engineering, Business Innovation Protection, Fintech, Business English, and Semiconductor Devices.
Embracing a diverse audience of global learners with varied academic backgrounds, cultures, and languages, our MOOCs on these platforms facilitate a comprehensive online learning experience. From lectures and practice sessions to discussions, projects, and assessments, all educational activities are conducted virtually, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all. To further support genuine academic research, learners may also apply for a reader or borrower card for access to the university’s library during semester breaks.
These MOOCs not only serve as standalone learning experiences but also as foundational elements for Blended Learning courses on campus. The development of online materials for Blended Learning courses can be a basis for future MOOCs and vice versa, fostering an interconnected educational ecosystem.
