Body

As we continue to enhance assessment practices that are fair, transparent, and focused on student learning, CEI is here to support you in designing effective criterion-referenced assessments. By assessing students using clear, shared standards—rather than one another—criterion-referenced assessment helps clarify expectations, promotes consistency, and keeps learning at the center. To support this work, we are offering the Assessment Essentials Series: four online, self-paced courses designed to help you implement these approaches in practical and meaningful ways.

This course will guide you on how to create and utilize rubrics to enhance clarity and consistency in your assessments.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:
  • develop assessment rubrics aligned with learning objectives
  • evaluate student work accurately using rubrics
  • use rubrics to provide constructive feedback to students

This course offers practical insights on adopting criterion-referenced assessment (CRA) in your courses, ensuring transparency and alignment with learning outcomes.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • identify ILOs and select aligned assessment methods
  • create clear criteria for evaluating performance
  • communicate grading criteria for fair assessments
  • provide feedback to support student development

This course offers fundamental skills for effectively using Canvas for assessment and feedback, including the timely release of grades and feedback required by the new policies.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • create and set up different types of assessments
  • develop grading rubrics for effective evaluation
  • utilize various options to grade assignments and provide valuable feedback
  • manage the release of assignments and course grades to students

This course is designed to provide you with the strategies necessary to create impactful assessments that enhance your teaching practice.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • identify the various assessment options available to you as a course instructor
  • create authentic assessments and enhance existing ones
  • incorporate GenAI strategies into learning assessments
  • apply techniques to reduce the susceptibility of assessment tasks
  • select mechanisms for providing more effective, efficient, and manageable feedback

The Assessment Essentials Series is part of the Academy of Education Excellence (AEE) program and is offered online in a self-paced format. Once you enroll, you will gain access to the course site and all learning materials. Upon completing a course, a badge will be issued by the AEE to acknowledge your achievement.
