Engaging students with education technological tools for active learning

Overview:

Engaging students in small and large classes by asking questions/facilitating group work with education technological tools (e.g. Google forms/Apps) is a popular and effective pedagogical supplement to lecturing. In this workshop, Prof Ben Chan and Dr Kenneth Leung will introduce the education technological tools they used to get students prepare before class, engage them and solicit their feedback in-class. Speakers will also elaborate the keys of incorporating these tools to enhance active learning (e.g. peer learning/evaluation, cooperative learning/team learning etc.). These tools can be used in a wide range of pedagogical scenarios, from pre-class activities, through in-class discussions, to after class assignments.

This workshop will first introduce the basic features of some popular education technological tools available, then let participants experience the benefits of the tools in the subsequent activities. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own mobile device (e.g. smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.) to experience how these tools work.

About the Speaker:

Prof Ben CHAN is currently an Associate Professor of Engineering Education (CIVL) and the Associated Director of the Center for Engineering Education Innovation. Ben has worked extensively in Engineering Education related areas, including academic advising, experiential learning and teaching pedagogies investigation. He received 3 teaching awards from different levels over the past 2 years, including the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award in 2016; the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2016 (Honorary Mention) and the Nomination for the 2017 UGC Teaching Award. He also accumulated over $20M education related grants as a PI and has over 50 journal and conference papers published between 2011 and 2017.

Dr. Kenneth LEUNG is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST. Receiving his Computer Science degree in University of British Columbia, he has further pursued his Master and PhD studies in Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST. He has been teaching a variety of computer science courses at all levels. He is the project leader of the Teaching Development Grant (TDG) projects, "Flipping the Classroom with iPad" and "Social Gaming Platform for COMP2711". Dr. Leung uses interactive and collaborative activities that stimulate critical and creative thinking in his classes. He has received numerous positive comments about his teaching style and skills in his teaching evaluations. He has also received the Best Teaching Award in the Master of Science Program in Information Technology.
