Common Core Program Series: “True Learning for the Millennial Generation”

In this seminar, Professor Shaw – the recipient of Common Core Course Excellence Award 2014 for her course, “Identity Goes Global – From Border Crossing to Boundary Remaking” – shared about her experience with designing and teaching common core courses on campus, the vision embedded, objectives intended, challenges faced, as well as classroom “tricks” that worked to keep her students inspired, motivated, if not transformed. She also discuss how to keep common core teaching at the heart of its fundamental mission – i.e. to equip students to ask the big questions in life, seek answers for themselves, and attain a better understanding of who they are and where their identity lies.

About the Speakers:

Professor May-yi Shaw is an Assistant Professor of Humanities Education at HKUST. She received her B.A. degree in Political Science and East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University.

A U.S.-born and Taiwan-raised “third culture kid” and having lived most of her adult life as a global nomad, Professor Shaw is passionate about East Asian literature and culture, identity and cross-cultural studies. Committed to general education and students’ whole-person development, Professor Shaw has served in various SHSS UG and PG programs and is currently the faculty coordinator for the new “HeadStart Fellow Program @HKUST”. Her courses on campus include “China in the Foreigners’ Eyes”, “Questions of Humanity in World Literature," and "Popular Culture of East Asia”.
