Artificial Intelligence and Education Series: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Abstract:

The use of ChatGPT and other AI tools in higher education has the potential to significantly impact teaching and learning practices and policies, including those related to academic integrity and assessment design. This talk, the first part of a three-part series, will introduce the topic and explore the ways in which ChatGPT and other AI tools can disrupt traditional teaching and learning practices, as well as the potential impacts on academic integrity and assessment design. We will also consider the ethical considerations and potential challenges that may arise in the use of these tools.

Dr Sean McMinn Director, Center for Education Innovation Dr Sean McMinn is the Director of Center for Educational Innovation at HKUST. Having nearly 20 years’ experience in higher education, Sean has taught a range of subjects, such as Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning, Business Communications, EAP, Digital Literacies, and Social Complex Systems, and has interests in learning design, educational technology, digital literacies, and networked learning. He won a Teaching Innovation Award in 2007 for his work with podcasts and education at HKUST and a SHSS Teaching Award in 2015.

	Prof. Jimmy Fung Associate Provost (Teaching and Learning), HKUST Professor Fung is a chair professor at the Division of Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Mathematics at HKUST. He specializes in air quality modeling and the application of remote sensing technology in air quality research in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta Region. He is also the Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning), providing leadership in developing and enhancing student learning and upholding the teaching quality for HKUST.
	Prof. Davis Bookhart Director, Sustainability/Net-Zero Office, HKUST Davis Bookhart is HKUST’s director of the Sustainability / Net-Zero Office with an academic appointment in the Division of Environment and Sustainability. Bookhart was previously the founding director of the Office of Sustainability at Johns Hopkins University, following six years as Senior Research Director at the Consumer Energy Council of America. Bookhart holds a master’s degree in International Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a master’s in American Literature from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
	Dr. Theresa Kwong Director, Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning, HKBU Theresa Kwong, Ph.D., SFHEA, is the Director of the Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning, Hong Kong Baptist University. Theresa’s major responsibilities at the Centre include: leading the promotion of a quality culture of learning and teaching within and beyond the University; advancing the scholarship of teaching and learning at the University; providing expertise to departments regarding data-informed improvement; and advising on the development and implementation of eLearning strategy and the promotion of innovative pedagogy. Theresa received a number of teaching and learning grants from within and outside the university and her research interests include academic integrity, technology enhanced learning, faculty professional development, and outcomes assessment.
	Dr. Jack Tsao Associate Director, Common Core Office, HKU Dr Jack Tsao is the Associate Director of the Common Core, the holistic trans- and inter-disciplinary undergraduate curriculum at the University of Hong Kong. He is focused on initiatives exploring innovative pedagogies, teacher professional development, and developing students’ future readiness capacities and its intersections between gaming, storytelling, and artificial intelligence technologies. With a PhD in Education, Jack’s scholarship focuses on comparative and international education, youth aspirations, and the sociology of education, grounded through an interdisciplinary lens. In addition, he has a background in organisational learning and development, entrepreneurship, and business management.
	Dr. Dongkun Han Lecturer, Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, CUHK Dr. Dongkun Han is currently a lecturer at the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He obtained his Ph.D. degree at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Han’s educational research interests include artificial intelligence technologies in general education, and hands-on pedagogical development in robotics education. His learner-centered teaching approach has earned him the University Education Award 2022, Dean’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2021 and 2019, and Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2018 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Abstract:

This workshop is designed for educators looking to stay current with the latest developments in AI and education. We will delve into the ways in which AI has already impacted and will continue to impact the what and how we teach in the higher education sector. We will explore the most important AI technologies already in use in higher ed and consider the potential impact of emerging technologies like ChatGPT on our day-to-day work as educators, from curriculum design, content creation & activity design to feedback and assessment. We will get hands-on and learn through doing by using ChatGPT to make smart use of our leaner data, write objectives and rapidly create course outlines.
