Co-Creating the Future of Education: Innovations in Student Partnership Initiatives

This workshop showcases the collaborative efforts of student partnership teams from HKUST, HKBU, and HKU, demonstrating the transformative potential of student-staff collaborations in shaping the future of higher education. These partnerships have led to developing unique projects that enhance learning experiences and embody the essence of co-creation in education.

Participants will be introduced to various initiatives, including projects that gamify medical education to increase empathy and awareness of healthcare disparities, design learning activities to enhance financial literacy skills and enhance students’ teaching experience with AI technology. These initiatives exemplify how student partnerships can improve learning outcomes, equip students with skills for the future, and innovate teaching methods.

The session will offer valuable insights into the strategies and advantages of student partnerships, highlighting how they can inspire students to take an active role in their education. Furthermore, it will provide faculty members with fresh perspectives on teaching, enhancing their understanding of student experiences and needs.

HKBU | Using Student Partnerships in Promoting Financial Literacy Among University Students in Hong Kong

In this project entitled “Financial Literacy for Students, by Students,” we used two types of student partnerships in designing and delivering financial literacy activities for university students as part of an experiential learning course. First, “dedicated” student partners collaborated with the course instructor in designing learning activities, providing feedback to students, and contributing to course assessments. Second, students enrolled in the course also served as important partners by providing peer feedback, co-designing assessment rubrics, and taking part in self-assessment as they worked on their financial literacy projects. With the additional support of community partners, 49 students designed creative personal finance activities such as workshops, social media campaigns, games, and quizzes for a total of 262 students participants. Based on the quantitative and qualitative data we collected, both our students and the participants showed improvement in financial literacy by the end of the course.

Speakers:

	Dr Archimedes David Guerra Lecturer I, Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance, HKBU Archie teaches Business Research Methods and Financial Management courses at the undergraduate level at Hong Kong Baptist University. He arrived in Hong Kong in 2010 as a recipient of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. Since then, Archie has actively participated in volunteer work involving the financial literacy of overseas workers in Hong Kong. His research focus is in the areas of personal finance, social entrepreneurship, and the use of technology in teaching and learning. Over the years, he worked on projects on topics such as blended learning, flipped classrooms, and self-regulated learning. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT). In 2020, he received the HKBU President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching. He currently serves as the Associate Director of HKBU's MSc in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) programme.

	Miss Wenqi CUI UG Year 4 Student, Department of History, HKBU Phoebe is a senior undergraduate History student at Hong Kong Baptist University who has a deep interest in the intersection of education and policy. In 2022, she worked on a project entitled “Comparative Analysis of Education Systems: Theory, Policy, and Research,” which examined China’s “Double Reduction Policy” and its implications for student welfare. That same year, she completed her research on the topic “Catholicism on Chinese Education from the 19th Century to the 20th Century.” In 2023, she expanded the scope of her work into environmental issues with projects such as documentary films and vlogs on extreme weather in the UK and a published letter to the South China Morning Post advocating for a legally-binding carbon-neutral goal for Hong Kong. Most recently, her passion for social change led to her membership in the GlobalMoms Initiative's Youth Advisory Committee, where she has been instrumental in launching a one-on-one entrepreneurship mentorship program.

HKUST | Learning League – Enhancing university students’ teaching experience with educational AI technology

The service-learning project aims to promote education equity among underprivileged students in local secondary schools. With the wide application of AI technology for personalised experience in daily life, secondary school students expect more tailored learning experience in classroom. After a pilot run of the project, student partners in the project had successfully identified gaps between expectations of secondary school students and teaching training offered to educators-to-be. In our session, our UG student partners share with the audience their experience collaborating with members of staff and working with PG students. At the same, they will explain how the partnership has enlightened them on pursuing a teaching career after graduation.

Speakers:

	Miss Fiona HO Lecturer, Center for Language Education, HKUST Fiona joined the Center for Language Education (CLE) at HKUST in 2016 and taught a range of undergraduate courses. She led The Informal Curriculum for Language Learning (iLANG) team and organised myriad events for students which successfully raised students’ interest in English language and complemented their academic learning. Her research interest is students’ learning motivation through experiential learning. She believes besides the context, the important factors which motivate students to learn are mutual trust and respect established between students and teacher.

	Miss Dora CHEUNG UG Year 2 Student, Department of Accounting, HKUST Dora is currently a Year 2 student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, majoring in Professional Accounting. Due to her interest in pursuing a career in education in the future, she joined the Learning League Project in 2023 and became a student tutor to deliver short-term English Language classes at Po Chiu Catholic Secondary School. She is exploring more possibilities for her future by participating in different works.

	Mr Andy NG UG Year 2 Student, Department of Ocean Science, HKUST Andy is currently a Year 2 student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, majoring in Ocean Science and Technology with an extended major in Artificial Intelligence. Having a chance to participate in the Learning League, teach his secondary school physics tutorials, and hold extra-curricular activities, he has a deeper understanding of the local education industry. He is also passionate about nature conservation work. He is an eligible tour guide in the Hong Kong Wetland Park and a Tertiary Eco-Ambassador in the Hong Kong Wetlands Conservation Association. He wants to discover more possibilities in pursuing his future in a career that works with different people.

HKU | Gamifying Medical Education for Empathy: A Student-Teacher Partnership Initiative

Our project aims to raise awareness of healthcare inequality and foster empathy among future healthcare practitioners Through the co-design of an interactive board game, students simulate the roles of vulnerable patients and make decisions for them, gaining a deeper understanding of their experiences. By immersing players in these experiences, we aim to create a powerful learning opportunity that educates and inspires compassion for the marginalized. This student-teacher partnership highlights the value of co-creation in education and emphasizes the potential of gamification in promoting empathy in medical education. By involving students in curriculum development and implementation, we enhance learning outcomes and provide faculty members with fresh perspectives on teaching. This project equips students with future-ready skills, such as community engagement and research, preparing them to become future medical educators.

	Dr Pauline Luk Lecturer, Bau Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education, HKU Dr Pauline Luk is a lecturer in Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. With a passion for medical education and the importance of empathy in healthcare, Dr. Luk plays a pivotal role in promoting awareness of healthcare inequality and fostering empathy among future healthcare practitioners. She is actively involved in student-teacher partnerships, co-creating innovative initiatives, including being the supervisor for Redesigning Student Learning Experience in Higher Education (RSLEIHE) in 2022 and 2024.

	Dr Mei Li Khong Lecturer / Digital Education Consultant, School of Clinical Medicine and School of Biomedical Sciences, HKU Dr Mei Li Khong is a Lecturer / Digital Education Consultant at School of Clinical Medicine and School of Biomedical Sciences, HKU. Dr Khong is involved in various teaching developments across educational technology, blended learning, and transdisciplinarity. She is especially passionate about student-educator partnership in teaching and learning, where students and faculty collaborate to co-design curriculum and pedagogy. She advocates using the transformative potential of student-educator partnership in shifting learning perspectives and bringing about student-centred improvements to a curriculum. Her team’s initiatives are recognized locally through HKU Teaching Excellence Awards and globally in QS Reimagine Education Awards.

	Mr Justin CHAN UG Year 4 Student, School of Clinical Medicine, HKU Justin Yik Hin Chan is a Year 4 medical student at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. During his studies, he has actively participated in the "Students in Medical Education" initiative at HKUMed. His contributions include a redesign of the flagship Active Learning Workshops, development of clinical interactive worksheets, and serving as a Moodle Forum Online Moderator to facilitate junior students' learning. Additionally, Justin's team has led a gamification project called EQUAL, with the goal of demonstrating how gamification can enhance students' understanding of healthcare inequality while fostering empathy. The project is engaged in the Redesigning Student Learning Experience in Higher Education (RSLEIHE) in 2024.
