Department: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)
Project Year: 2023/24
Duration: 2023-2024
Description: This project aims to address the challenge that generative AI poses to traditional modes of evaluating and assessing student’s communication skills and abilities. Adopting Li Wei’s theory of ‘translanguaging’ (2018), which emphasizes the importance of the communication process over product, this project utilizes blended learning and a new set of extended curricula to use generative AI for effective communication in academic and professional contexts. It additionally designs new assessment tools to evaluate student performance by focusing on three non-communications based HKUST competencies – personal development, problem-solving, and social responsibility. Overall, this project offers a new and innovative approach to teaching and assessing effective student performance without directly assessing student’s communication competency.
