A Rookie’s Blended Learning Journey

Overview:

In this talk, Prof. Cheung Ki Ling shared his personal experiences of converting a course (ISOM4770 Supply Chain Management), which he has been teaching for 20 years, into a blended learning one. Leveraging on the course’s strong emphasis on case-based learning, the teaching approach is interactive in nature, with case discussion, games and project presentation to engage students in class. His goal of using a blended approach is to integrate the best aspects of both face-to-face and online learning for students’ benefit. However, as a rookie of blended learning, more than often he had to do it by trial and error. But at the end all the efforts did pay off. In this sharing, he also talked about his motivation, preparation, execution and takeaways from such endeavor. ISOM 4770 students has also been invited to share their learning experience and thoughts on blended learning course.

Speaker:

Prof. Cheung Ki Ling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management at HKUST. He received a B.S. degree in Mathematics from University of Wisconsin, Madison, a M.S. degree and a Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering, both from Stanford University. Prior to joining HKUST in 1993, he was a management consultant at Teknekron Corporation, California, U.S.A. Dr. Cheung has extensive consulting experience in US, Canada and Hong Kong. His clients include companies such as Matsushita, British Petroleum, Dofasco Steel, Algoma Steel and Esquel. He also taught executive-level supply chain management courses for HKUST. His primary research interest is in inventory management and supply chain management, and his research work appears in leading professional journals such as Management Science, Operations Research, IIE Transactions, Naval Research Logistics and Supply Chain Management Review. He had been a member of the editorial board for the supply chain management department of IIE Transactions. Dr. Cheung received the HKUST "Best Ten Lecturers" award in 1996 and “The Franklin Prize” teaching award in 2008.
