Creating an Intriguing and Visualisable Learning Experience (CIVL-X) for probability and statistics

Project Leader: Prof Anthony LEUNG
School: School of Engineering
Department: Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL)
Project Start Year: 2019/20
Description:

This project aims to achieve:

  • To boost civil engineering students’ motivation, effectiveness and appreciation on learning the importance and the roles of probability and statistics in the design of stochastic civil engineering systems
  • To create a new and intriguing game-based training platform (CIVL-X) to facilitate students’ learning of the practical applications of the basic probabilistic and statistical concepts learn from classrooms, in a fun way
  • To facilitate the lecturers of probability and statistic courses (listed in Section 7) to more effectively teach and interact with their students
  • Through the gaming in CIVL-X, to make civil engineering students familiarise the role of civil engineers in different disciplines as well as the respective prospective career path in the industry

Ultimately, in a longer-term beyond the tenure of this project, it is hoped that CIVL-X can be integrated as an Mobile App (published by HKUST via ITSC) and be used in the program level to promote the subject of civil engineering to a wider range of audience such as high school students/parents (e.g., during university outreach day) and year 1 students who have yet made a decision of major selection.
