Canvas Updates for Fall 2025
Hope you're having a fantastic summer! We're excited to share some fresh updates and new features coming to Canvas for Fall 2025 that will make your teaching experience smoother and more engaging.
Here's what's new:
⚙️ Updates to Default Course Settings:
We've updated the default course settings to better align with popular preferences. These changes will only apply to newly created courses. Rest assured, the core functionality remains the same, and you can always customize settings to fit your needs.
- Course Navigation Menu: Tools in the navigation menu have been reorganized for easier access.

Course Settings: New courses will now default to:
- Hiding the automatically calculated Course Total
- Hiding Grade Distribution Graphs
- Disabling comments in announcements
- Course Term Dates: The default term period will now begin one month before the semester starts and conclude six weeks after the semester ends.
Important Note: If you import content from an existing course, you'll need to manually update these settings if you wish to adopt the new defaults.
💬 New Tool: Chat
Looking for a quick way to connect with your students? The new built-in Chat tool allows everyone in the course to have real-time, public conversations. You can enable Chat at any time from your course's Settings under Navigation. Want to learn more? Check out the full guide here.
