An automated platform for quantitative student assessment

Project Start Year: 2017/18
Description:

With the development of new technology, teaching and learning have been experiencing dramatic changes and outcomebased teaching has attracted much attention. However, the execution of the outcome-based teaching method can be improved in many aspects. In particular, the measurement results have not been properly utilized for improving course design. On the other hand, although there are many outcomes and measurements, the final assessment for students is normally a single letter grade, which is far from sufficient in assisting student learning. In this project, we will develop an automated platform for systematic and quantitative student assessment. The platform will be able to provide quantitative student assessment based on their achievement in one course or from one curriculum, with properly designed course outcomes (what students are supposed to achieve), learning activities and measurements (how teachers evaluate the achievement) based on the syllabus (what students are supposed to learn). In particular, the proposed platform will be able to give a detailed assessment report about students’ achievement/ strength/ weakness, instead of a single letter grade. Besides, it can also provide suggestions on how to write outcomes at different cognitive levels and within different knowledge domains, and how many measurement points are needed in one course to provide a reliable assessment.
