Online Teaching - Mixed Mode Teaching

Body
In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, HKUST adopted Real-time Online (RTO) teaching for classes starting Spring 2019/2020. As the situation has improved, HKUST has decided to transition to a Mixed Mode Teaching (MMT) approach for most classes in Fall 2020/2021. The five steps below provide you with the definition of MMT, the pedagogy to facilitate your class, and the classroom equipment needed to successfully deliver MMT. There are also video walk-throughs to help set up the two classroom types you may be assigned.

Blended Learning

Body
Blended Learning (BL) has been extensively used in Higher Education for many years. With advancements in computer technologies, students now have new ways to access and interact with knowledge and people. However, new information and communication technologies on their own do not necessarily lead to good learning experiences. Good pedagogy and well-designed courses are crucial.

Education Innovation

Body
CEI advocates for the use of innovative pedagogies and advanced teaching and learning technologies. These include Gen AI, AR, VR, Blended Learning, Experiential Learning, Game-based Learning, MOOC, Real-time Online, and Mixed-Mode Teaching. We continuously explore and evaluate new pedagogies and technologies, keeping up to date with the latest advancements and changing HE environment. Based on our research, we provide guidance and recommendations to our teaching staff on effective pedagogies and technologies to use in our classrooms.

Learning Activities

Body

Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs)

TLAs are activities which aimed at activating the action verbs used in the ILO's. As its name suggests, TLA include what the teacher does (teaching activities) and what the student does (learning activities). In learner-centered course, selecting teaching and learning activities should not be a random process.

Learning Assessments

Body

Assessment is an intrinsic part of students’ learning process. From the student point of view, assessment defines the actual curriculum. It directs attention to what is important; acts as an incentive for study, and steers student’s learning behavior.

Learning Outcomes

Body

Writing effective learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are statements of what students CAN DO as a result of a learning experience. The statements focused on student learning rather than our teaching.

Online Teaching - Real-time Online

Body
In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, HKUST adopted Real-time Online (RTO) teaching for classes starting Spring 2019/2020. During this period, CEI provided faculty members with training resources, best practices, and guidelines to assist them in delivering their courses through Zoom and assessing students using online exams in Canvas.
