Gamification or the process of adding game-like elements in a particular setting is gaining popularity in the higher education setting. This phenomenon is due to the positive effect of gamification in engaging the students in the cognitive, behavioral, and affective domains. To further understand how gamification works, we will be looking into the MDA (Mechanics, Dynamics, and Aesthetics) framework to understand the consumption and production of game artifacts and how it can affect your gamification design. We will also unpack the GAFCC-F (goal, access, feedback, collaboration, challenges, fantasy) model to leverage the various motivational elements to enhance students’ learning experience.

In this session, we examined two cases at the University of Hong Kong. We looked into how the course team applied the MDA Framework and GAFCC-F model in their game design. We also played and experienced a sample of these games and wrap up with tips and tricks to start your own gamification journey.
