Advance Learning Fund Briefing Session

The Advanced Learning Fund (ALF) Briefing Session introduces faculty members to opportunities to advance their teaching through funded innovation. This session provides an overview of the Advanced Learning Fund, including its purpose, priorities, and criteria for developing a strong proposal. Participants will explore examples of impactful teaching projects and gain clarity on how to align their ideas with student learning outcomes and institutional goals. Participants will also gain insights into themes such as innovative pedagogies, emerging technologies, and outreach initiatives, as well as the new ALF application system. The session aims to help faculty move from initial ideas to well-positioned proposals with confidence and strategic direction.

Speakers:  

Dr Sean McMinn
Director, Center for Education Innovation

Dr Sean McMinn is the Director of Center for Educational Innovation at HKUST. Having nearly 20 years’ experience in higher education, Sean has taught a range of subjects, such as Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning, Business Communications, EAP, Digital Literacies, and Social Complex Systems, and has interests in learning design, educational technology, digital literacies, and networked learning. He won a Teaching Innovation Award in 2007 for his work with podcasts and education at HKUST and a SHSS Teaching Award in 2015.


Dr Beatrice CHU
Assitant Director, Center for Education Innovation

Dr. Beatrice Chu is the Assistant Director of the Center for Education Innovation at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She holds a PhD in Physics and an MEd in Educational Administration. Prior to her current role, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Electronic Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chu leads initiatives that advance innovative teaching and learning in higher education, including professional development programs, teaching innovation projects, micro-credential courses for faculty members, and the pre-teaching training course for graduate teaching assistants. Her work focuses on experiential learning, gamification, generative AI, and immersive technologies such as AR/VR/MR to enhance student engagement and support the development of future-ready competencies.


Ms June CHAN
Assitant Director, Center for Education Innovation

June Chan is an Assistant Director at the Center for Education Innovation at HKUST. Before joining HKUST, June headed eLearning development for corporate training at a flagship airline. In her current role, she leads efforts to build the capacity of faculty and teaching staff in enterprise-level EdTech. This includes overseeing the operations, training, and support of the core LMS and associated tools to enhance active learning in the university. She also leads efforts in developing innovative pedagogies across various teaching and learning modalities, such as AI-assisted teaching and learning, blended learning, MOOCs, asynchronous and synchronous online learning, and HyFlex teaching. She is dedicated to developing practical, transferable solutions that help improve student learning outcomes.
