Invigorate your Teaching to Enhance their Learning: Strategies to Engage Students
Overview:
Effective teaching requires knowledge of the discipline and a commitment to student engagement. In this seminar, Prof Garvin Percy Dias shared his strategies to engage students with active learning strategies. Most students learn best and retain more when they are actively engaged with the content, constructing meaning and applying concepts. Active learning can be messy, and it’s lots of hard work, but it is also fun and rewarding—for you and your students. Prof Dias shared some of the simple but practical techniques that every course instructor can use to infuse your instructions with activities that engage and motivate students. Reflecting on the his teaching career, Prof Dias also shared how he journeyed through his teaching career over the past 20 years, suggests some key ingredients for improving one’s teaching and showcases how to tackle some common challenges and pitfalls.
About the Speaker:
Professor Garvin Percy Dias was the awardee of 2016 Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching. He received his doctorate from the Fudan University, China in 1998. Subsequently, he joined HKUST in 1999 and is currently Associate Professor of Business Education in the Department of ISOM. His research interests include IS Auditing, Computer Network Management, and Group Decision Support Systems. He has been awarded four times for the School of Business and Management’s Franklin Prize for Teaching Excellence, and selected twice in the annual University-wide student poll for the Best Ten Lecturers. He has also received special mention for excellence in teaching in the 2015 Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching.
