In this workshop, Prof. Kenneth LEUNG, the recipient of the 2021 Common Core Teaching Excellence Award, will introduce the teaching philosophy and the innovative pedagogical approaches that he has used in his award-winning course COMP2711 Discrete Mathematical Tools for Computer Science.

Recipient of the 2021 Common Core Teaching Excellence Award

Prof. Kenneth Leung
Assistant Professor in Engineering Education
Department of Computer Science and Engineering, HKUST

Prof. Kenneth LEUNG is an Assistant Professor in Engineering Education in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST. After receiving his Computer Science degree in University of British Columbia, he has further pursued his Master and PhD studies in Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST. He won the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2019 (Honorary Mention) for his course COMP1001 Exploring Multimedia and Internet Computing, and the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2021 for his course COMP2711 Discrete Mathematical Tools for Computer Science. As a firm believer in engaging, motivating education, and in making the acquisition of knowledge fun, Kenneth has continuously endeavored to advance and enliven his students' learning experience.

Designing Experiential Learning with Design Thinking

ENGG 1300 – Design Thinking for Health Innovation” is a project‐based experiential learning course predicated on the Design Thinking process in the context of health innovation, all to address real‐world unmet societal needs.

While the course introduces students to the Design Thinking approach, it also behoves the teaching team to apply the same principles in designing and executing a learning experience where students’ learning needs are understood and looked after. An experience that motivates students to learn and expose themselves to the methods of Design Thinking.

In this discussion, we will share the key elements of the course, and give an overview of teaching approaches, team collaboration, and other factors that contributed to the success of this course.
