Experiential Digital Learning in the Extended Curriculum

Project Leader: Levi LAM, Mark MELICAN
School: School of Humanities & Social Science
Department: Center for Language Education (previously Language Center) (CLE)
Funding Year: 2022/23
Description:

This project proposes the development of a series of digital education Learning Experiences as part of the Center for Language Education’s Extended Curriculum. These Learning Experiences would be designed by the project team and facilitated by student partners, vetted for their familiarity with the equipment and the digital literacy skills specific to the genre. Besides the experiential benefits received by our student partners, students who participate in these Learning Experiences will benefit from opportunities to engage in and practice digital literacy skills, applying communicative competencies covered in their formal learning to produce digital artefacts in particular vlogs, audio podcasts and infographics. Possible themes and foci for the learning experiences will be adjusted depending on students’ interests and/or the digital genres emphasised in CLE courses, enabling the project to complement and support the formal curriculum while engaging students in their interests. In addition to creating in-person workshop materials, the project team will create self-study materials to support the experiential learning process. This would align with the philosophy of learner autonomy. Upon completion of a Learning Experience, student-produced work will be showcased on a multimodal student publication platform to be shared with the wider HKUST community and beyond, providing both an authentic audience, a sense of ownership, and a space to promote the Learning Experiences.
