Institutional eLearning Platform and Tools

One of CEI’s key goals is to leverage technology to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. We have implemented an institutional Learning Management platform and various eLearning tools to improve the teaching and learning experience at HKUST.

To ensure effective use of these tools, we offer regular eLearning workshops to familiarize teaching staff with them, understand their pedagogical value, and use them effectively in their teaching activities.

We also continuously monitor the development of teaching technologies in the market and recommend additional innovative tools that have pedagogical value.

Canvas

Canvas is a user-friendly Learning Management System adopted by HKUST in July 2014 to support the University's Blended Learning initiatives and evolving teaching and learning needs. It was first introduced as a trial in Fall 2014/15 and fully implemented in Spring 2014/15. By the end of Fall 2015/16, Canvas had entirely replaced the previous LMS.

Turnitin

Turnitin is a widely-used tool for detecting plagiarism and promoting academic integrity among students and faculty worldwide. In addition to checking the originality of submitted work, Turnitin encourages a writing process that emphasizes the importance of originality and learning. This process includes originality checking, online grading, feedback, and peer review. HKUST has subscribed to Turnitin's services to help reduce instances of plagiarism within the institution.er to minimize plagiarism issues within HKUST.

Turnitin has been integrated into Canvas to facilitate originality checks for student work.

Faculty/ teaching staff may log into your course site in Canvas to utilize this feature for student assignment submission.

iPeer

iPeer is a student peer evaluation system that has been customized from an open-source application to suit the needs of our institution. It supports four types of evaluations: Point Distribution, Rating Scale, Rubric, and Commendation. The system facilitates teaching staff to conduct peer-to-peer evaluations on group projects.

Mentimeter

Mentimeter empowers educators to bridge the gap between instruction and student engagement. By utilizing its web-based platform, you can create interactive polls, word clouds, quizzes, and more to enhance your presentations. HKUST has secured an Enterprise License for Mentimeter, providing full access to all slide and question types, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.

Personal Response System (iPRS)

iPRS is a tool that promotes active learning by allowing instructors to receive and analyze real-time feedback from students in large classrooms. With the click of a button, students can respond to questions posed by the instructor, providing immediate insight into their understanding of the subject matter. iPRS has been implemented in many teaching venues at HKUST.

Zoom

Sometimes, it may be necessary for teaching staff to transition from in-person on-campus instruction to live online instruction. The key tool that can be utilized for this purpose at HKUST is Zoom, which allows for the conduct of live, online sessions.
